The Golden Knights opened the 2020-2021 season with the first game of the season at home in T-Mobile Arena against the Arizona Coyotes. The building was loud as it was a sell out for this first game of the new season.
Erik Haula got the crowd on their feet early when he broke in on a breakaway just 1:41 into the game and completely deked out Anti Raanta for the Coyotes in net and scored after being set up by Reilly Smith and Nate Schmidt as the roof of the building almost came off with the noise from the crowd. Michael Grabner tied the game up for the Coyotes at 8:27 of the first period from Lawson Crouse as he flew down the left side and wired a quick wrist shot that beat Fleury short side to tie the game up. At 11:36 of the first period William Karlsson got into a wrestling match with Adam Helewka of the Coyotes after Helewka bumped into Fleury and Karlsson took exception to his goalie being bumped. Both players received coincidental minor roughing penalties. Just 11 second later Jason Demers skated into the Vegas zone, went wide around the net and took a quick shot that beat Fleury through the legs to give the Coyotes a 2-1 lead in this game. The goal was set up from Keller and Galchenyuk. The first period would come to an end with the Coyotes having the 2-1 lead.
In the second period Dylan Strome scored at 1:33 of the period from Stepan and Fischer to make it 3-1 Coyotes. Derek Stepan then scored at 3:25 of the period from Ferraro and Chychryn to make it a 4-1 Coyotes lead.
In the third period Brock Nelson the new Golden Knight scored on a beautiful shot that he swatted out of mid air after McNabb took a shot from the point that Raanta stopped but the rebound went to his right where Nelson was parked. This was Nelson’s first goal as a Golden Knight as he was in the right place at the right time and the score was 4-2 Coyotes. Unfortunately Galchenyuk scored just a minute and a half later to make it 5-2 Coyotes and that would be the final score as the Golden Knights dropped their home opener to start the season.
As the GM of the Golden Knights I was summoned to see the owner of the Golden Knights Bill Foley after the game. Foley completely chewed me out stating that if I don’t accomplish his tasks for the team I will be fired. One of the goals of Bill Foley was to win the home opener which we failed to do. The other task was to upgrade the Club Seating, which I have already started to upgrade and are currently under renovation for the next month. Bill Foley and the fans are currently unhappy with the team.
The Golden Knights now head out on the road with stops in Winnipeg against the Jets who went to the Stanley Cup Finals last season but lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins Patrick Laine cleaned up on the NHL awards last season picking up the Hart Trophy, and the Art Ross Trophy and him and Mark Scheiffle and Nikolaj Ehlers were the top line in the NHL last season in points. This will not be an easy team to play. After the Jets the Golden Knights will be in Chicago to take on the Blackhawks followed by a game against the Wild in Minnesota.
