GOLDEN KNIGHTS IN WINNIPEG TAKING ON THE JETS

October 6, 2020

The Golden Knights arrived at the MTS Center to take on the Campbell Bowl Champions from last season the Winnipeg Jets with their top scoring line in the NHL last season and the Hart and Art Ross champion Patrick Laine.

The game opened up with a lot of physical play as Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien was a wrecking ball out there throwing some huge hits around. Breyden McNabb got into a fight with Josh Morrissey just 1:24 into the game and McNabb pummeled Morrissey with some uppercuts and dropped Morrissey to the ice and Morrissey was sporting quite a shiner in the penalty box afterwards as both players received 5 minute majors for fighting. At 8:41 of the first period Jesper Fast scored his first goal as a Golden Knight on a tip in front of Hellebuyck after a shot from the point by Colin Miller and the Golden Knights had a 1-0 lead. The score would remain 1-0 as the first period came to an end.

At 6:16 of the second period McNabb got into a shoving match with Brian Little of the Jets and both player were off for 2 minutes for roughing. At 17:55 Reilly Smith scored for the Golden Knights on an individual effort as he picked up a loose puck in front of Hellebuyck after a rebound and buried the puck through the five hole to make it 2-0 Vegas as the second period came to an end.

At 12:26 of the third period the captain of the Jets Blake Wheeler scored after he drove hard to the net and crashed into Fleury with the puck trickling through Fleury’s legs and past the goal line. The goal was reviewed for goal tender interference but was ruled a good goal to the dismay and anger from the Vegas bench. The score was 2-1 Vegas now with just over 7 minutes remaining. The Jets pulled Hellebuyck late in the game but could not score and the Golden Knights hung on to win the game 2-1 and pick up their first win of the season against a very good Jets team.

The Golden Knights now travel to the United Center in Chicago to take on the Blackhawks who do not have Corey Crawford anymore as he has left the team to be the new goalie for the Islanders.

Speaking after the game with NBC Sports this is what the Vegas GM had to say about this game “I thought we played an exceptional game against one of the best teams in the NHL. The Jets with their big line of Schieffle, Laine and Ehlers are a dangerous team and we managed to shut this line down. Our rookie Erik Brannstom played very well in this game, he jumped into the rush, he had some scoring chances and he was solid on defense with some big hits. I thought our team looked really good in this game and hopefully we can continue to play this way as our road trip continues.”
