RED WINGS BEAT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS IN VEGAS

October 14, 2020

The winless Detroit Red Wings arrived at T-Mobile Arena in Vegas to take on the Golden Knights still looking for their first win of the season.

At 4:29 of the first period Shea Theodore broke in from the point and wired a beautiful wrist shot top shelf to make it 1-0 Vegas as Jonathan Bernier had no chance on the shot in net. The newly acquired Justin Schultz for the Red Wings scored an amazing goal at 17:46 of the period after coming in from the point and dekeing Fleury before sliding the puck in the net, glove side to tie the game up set up by Larkin and Zadina. Just a minute later Shea Theodore was absolutely hammered on the side boards by Justin Abdelkader and he needed help from the trainer getting to the dressing room and would not return to this game.

At 2:41 of the second period Abdelkader crushed Jonathan Marchessault from behind into the boards in the corner and was assessed a 5 minute major penalty and a game misconduct on the play as the Vegas bench was screaming in anger. Unfortunately the Golden Knights could not score on the 5 minute power play and the score would remain 1-1 heading into the third period.

At 4:22 of the third period Tyler Bertuzzi scored from Leipsic and Athanasiou to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead. Jonathan Bernier was sensational the rest of the way and he stopped all shots in the third period and Detroit hung on to win the game 2-1 and get their first win of the season.

Speaking with the Vegas medical staff it was revealed that Theodore would be day to day with a lower body injury. The rookie Zach Whitecloud would be taking over for Theodore on defense.
